The Quest to Rediscover Microsoft’s Soul and Imagine a Better Future for Everyone
‘Hit Refresh, The Quest to Rediscover Microsoft’s Soul and Imagine a Better Future for Everyone’ – is the book authored by the Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and co-authored by Greg Shaw, Senior director of the CEO office and Jill Tracie Nichols, the chief of staff of Satya Nadella
The book is about Satya’s journey from Hyderabad to Milwaukee for MS Computer Science, to Bay Area California in Sun Microsystems and to Redmond Seattle in Microsoft!
The book has detailed mentions about Satya’s love for cricket with so many citations of cricket mapped with business strategy scenarios when comes to win, learn, unlearn, teamwork, strategize, and many more!
Though Satya’s childhood dream was to play Cricket for Hyderabad, he also had first started developing interest in computers from the age of 15 when his father brought him a Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer kit!
Satya joined Microsoft in 1992 as an engineer for working on Windows NT when Bill Gates was the CEO. Before getting appointed as the 3rd CEO of Microsoft after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, he played significant roles with great successes as the president of server and tools division, senior vice president of research and development for the online services division, and executive vice president of cloud and enterprise group.
Microsoft was an early pioneer in personal computing. Bill Gates had visualized the world with personal computers at every home and office desk and being connected with the entire world with the internet, which was very well achieved! But then, it missed the mobile and search waves, didn’t participate in the consumer social networking wave, and was still behind in cloud. When Satya took over as Microsoft CEO on February 4, 2014, the company was kind of struggling. In January 2024, as 56-year-old Nadella approached a decade of being in charge, Microsoft overtook Apple to become the world’s most valuable public company! Today also Microsoft is worth $3+ trillion and has made its mark of being in the top 3 list!
‘Hit Refresh’ provides highly valuable insights and Satya’s wisdom on data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, compliance, the role of IT giants to balance between human independence and government policies with the goal to protect humankind and many more!
The book highly emphasizes the value of keeping empathy at the ground level and creating an empathy centric culture. Lessons learnt from ups and downs of life can play a pivotal role in shaping you as an empathetic person and a leader and create the same culture in the organization worldwide! Satya believes that empathy is a muscle, and it needs to be exercised!
This book is not only the autobiography of Satya, but it’s also about his two most loving and valuable families – First, his biological family: his parents, wife Anupama, his two daughters, and a special child Zain (who unfortunately left to his heavenly journey in February 2022, 4.5 years after the release of this book), and the second family – Microsoft!
The book is also about hitting refresh by introspecting and uniquely reloading that needs to be cleaned, refreshed, and discovering the change needed!
‘Hit Refresh’ teaches lessons of persistence, collaborative working, handling challenges and triumphs, leading with example, constant self-improvement and introspect rather than competing, leveraging technology for collaboration and positive change, cultivating mindfulness, embracing diverse cultures, flexibility and adaptability.
I highly recommend everyone; of any age, any field, any gender, at any stage of his / her professional journey should read this book!
I feel bad about reading this book this late! But glad I didn’t miss reading it!
Thanks, Satya, for sharing these insights and lessons with us!
