The first sci-fi movie got released way before my I could even think of! 1927! The German expressionist silent film Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang that was based AI based humanoid robot is getting ready to celebrate its centennial! The first sci-fi hit came in 1984 was The Terminator directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. A. I. Artificial Intelligence was released by Steven Spielberg in 2001. The Terminator in 1984 was the biggest hit followed by series. Same was repeated for Marvel and Star Wars series!
I’m not going to talk about AI based films here but want to start by highlighting human’s wish and vision century ago and depict the reality of today in the world of AI!
During World War II times around 1940s, this high precise and revolutionary thought was born: ‘Humans use the information available (data) and reasons (logic, later getting translated into algorithms) to solve any problem. If same type of logistics is provided to computers, they should be able to generate similar results!’ The first POC Logic Theorist to solve mathematical theorems like humans was presented in 1956. But the road was not smooth – Computers were able to execute only and not store data and commands. Computation power was highly low. Computer prices were sky rocketing. Talent was limited. Funding was an issue. And it was the era of AI Winter! Though significant success was not seen, the USA, Britain, Japan, and Russia continued to invest talents and money in this segment.
It was prophesied in 1957 that computers would beat humans in chess, which happened in 1996 when IBM’s Deep Blue (developed by the researchers of Carnegie Mellon University) defeated that time’s world champion Garry Kasparov. Before that MIT had published first convincingly chess playing program Kotok-McCarthy in 1961 which played chess match between 2 computers and lost.
Around 2010, revolutionary shift happened both in hardware and software areas fueling to AI growth – Computers got updated to high-capacity microprocessors to handle large data sets and handle complex graphics, access of huge datasets became possible, and algorithms kept achieving newer heights every time; gradually placing us at the maturity level where we are today!
AI Models:
Since the inception of AI till today, there are many AI models invented for various uses. AI model is a program that contains data sets, do analysis based on this dataset, create data, automate datasets, and identifies patterns to predict certain outcomes which helps in taking accurate decisions. There are different AI models for achieving different goals.
Objectives of these AI models are to:
- Automate monotonous tasks
- Solve or simplify complex problems
- Provide valuable insights
- Make accurate predictions and recommendations
- Identify gaps, threats, or vulnerabilities
- Create frameworks that allow investing humans’ time in more meaningful activities
- Create new contents
- Define strategies
- Sentimental analysis
- Personalized interactions, suggestions, and solutions
- Understand, render, and translate human’s language and remove language barriers
- Convert unstructured data into meaningful information, clean-up dirty data
AI Tools:
Large number of open source and paid tools available for different AI applications. Here’s the small pinch from the ocean of AI tools:
- OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed based on natural language processing pretty much answering any kind of any questions
- OpenAI’s GPT-4 is advanced language model with high variety of datasets used for interactive natural language processing tasks
- IBM’s Watson’s multiple products on various AI applications including code assistance, natural language processing, automation, machine learning models, performance monitoring, operations, productivity and more
- Ada’s customer service platform chatbot with resolution automation approaches
- Midjourney is an incredible text to image creation generative AI tool
- Pictory is another generative AI tool used to create videos from scripts, voices, and small footages
- SheetAI is used to create desired outputs based on text inputs in your google sheets without hassle of remembering excel commands
- Google’s Bard, Microsoft’s Bing AI are other popular and majorly opensource solutions for creation, analysis, resolution, and collaboration purposes
- Salesforce Einstein GPT is world’s first cloud based generative AI CRM tool that assists salespeople to identify focused clients, adopt to changing, sales, marketing, get the most out of Salesforce, create your own bots
- Drift’s AI bot for qualifying leads and meetings
- Intercom’s resolution bot for customizations on logos, emails, surveys and many more
- WordPress’s WP engine to engage with website users in multiple ways, get most for your sites reach, and related applications
These AI tools are rapidly evolving as the AI models they support are also maturing at highly rapid pace and still a long way to go…
With this rapid growth, it is foremost important and essential that these AI models, tools, and derived AI solutions are used with great level of responsibility. Ethics for fair and responsible use of technology and data, transparency, unbiased approach, and fairness for everyone involved are non-negotiable elements of AI’s success.
A journey from fiction to fact and many more fascinations to come true…
